The most recent statistics available from the Department of Housing show that 13,514 persons were counted as homeless in November.
4,105 youngsters made use of emergency housing during that month.
There were 13,179 homeless persons in total the previous month.
Prior to today's revelation, Mike Allen, Director of Advocacy at Focus Ireland, a homeless organization, stated on RTÉ's News at One that if there are more than 4,000 homeless children, it would be "totally shocking".
"It is not just that there are more children homeless, they are homeless for much longer," Mr Allen said.
