Last week, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine issued a statement urging a Yes vote in the referendums on Family and Care. However, a spokesperson now acknowledges that this was an error.

A press release titled 'Minister McConalogue advocates YES vote amongst the farming community' was distributed from the departmental email account on Wednesday. The department was unaware of this statement and has stated that it should not have been sent from a department account.

According to the McKenna judgement, public funds cannot be used to promote a particular stance in a referendum.

The referendums on Family and Care were both defeated over the weekend, with 67.69% and 73.93% of voters respectively opposing the proposed amendments.
