Taoiseach LEO VARADKAR stated that the government is not "planning" to hold an early general election this year, the possibility has not been ruled out.

Speaking on "This Week" on RTÉ One, Varadkar said that he would run in the upcoming election and that he thought his party, Fine Gael, would win more seats and form a government.

Regarding the issue of several present Fine Gael TDs having already announced their intention to not seek reelection, “I would expect to see in the next local elections, we will see a number of councillors doing extremely well in those elections, and they will then become the obvious candidates for the general election,” he said.
