Blue represents males, orange females. 1182 voluntarily tested migrants were discovered to be over 18.

Sweden for the first time has introduced a system for medical age-assessment of asylum seekers, writes Swedish Rättsmedicinalverket, which is comparable to the Forensic Institute in Denmark.

Rättsmedicinalverket states on its website that some asylum seekers must undergo two tests: X-rays of wisdom teeth and a MRI scan of the knee.

The result is then sent to the Migration Board which processes asylum applications.

Thousands of so-called "unaccompanied child refugees" await the results of their asylum application.

If they are under 18 they have a right to seek family reunification and they can stay in the country. If they are over 18 years, it may be more difficult to obtain asylum and for family reunification.

The age-test does not determine exactly how old the asylum seekers are, but judges only whether they are over or under 18 years.

In Sweden the age-test is voluntary but whether they agreed to it or not is noted by the Migration Board in their application for asylum.

Elias Palm, coroner and Head of Rättsmedicinalverket explains in a video on the site, the purpose is to distinguish children from adults.

Resources that are meant for children, must go to children, he explains.

Rättsmedicinalverket has sent the results of the age test for 1,482 asylum seekers - almost all men or boys to the Migration Board.

Of those assessed, 1215 were found to be above 18 years. This corresponds to 82 percent.

In only 253 cases Rättsmedicinalverket found that the asylum seekers were below 18 years.

In Denmark, age assessments of asylum seekers is carried out by forensic scientists at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen.

This is done when the Immigration Service is unsure whether a refugee or immigrant is giving their real age.

In 2015 351 unaccompanied 'children' were tested in Denmark - out of them 232 were estimated to be over 18.

In Denmark the method used is a radiograph of the tooth-set and an X-ray of the hand bones.

Does anyone have any idea if Ireland has any sort of age test?
Were the Syrian migrants put up in that four star hotel in Ballaghaderreen age-tested?
    I imagine they were not.
