Call for hate crime laws after anti-Islam graffiti in Dublin

A leading Muslim figure has called for hate crime legislation after Islamophobic graffiti was sprayed at a park and a bus stop in Tallaght, south Dublin.

Gardaí said they were taking the matter seriously and are conducting an investigation.
The graffiti, saying “Fuck Islam”, was sprayed in multiple locations at Sean Walsh Memorial Park, as well as at bus stops near The Square shopping centre over Sunday night. It was reported online by the Tallaght Echo newspaper.

South Dublin County Council yesterday said it had removed up to 15 items of graffiti.
Ali Selim, a theologian and senior member of the Islamic Cultural Centre, said people rang him on Monday morning about it.

“Some Muslims contacted me and said they had seen the graffiti,” said Dr Selim. “They found it very offensive and it really upset them.”

He said he believed this was an “individual incident” and that it was “not a common trend” in Ireland.
“The person who acted in this way is ignorant about the situation in Ireland,” said Dr Selim. “But while this person is ignorant, he is not the only one to blame.”

He said that people in the media need to reflect on how they are reporting on terrorism and Islam.
“Stereotyping is not fair, it divides and broadens the base of confrontation,” said Dr Selim.

He said he had always paid tribute to how gardaí handle racist incidents.

“Gardaí do not tolerate racism of this nature; they act promptly,” he said.

“Ireland should have hate crime legislation. If we had it, if an individual thinks in this way, he will at least think twice.

“Imagine if this person was writing this and a Muslim person was passing, and one got angry? You might have a different story.”

I love the very thinly veiled threat at the bottom, what would happen had a Muslim walked past, would be engage in a debate about Islam or would he have gone all Jihadi on him?

Could you imagine all the snowflakes that would get rounded up if the same standard was applied to Christianity?

That would be one pestilence that would be gone in one stroke.

How could that be considered a hate-crime?
    It's vandalism but not a hate-crime.
People should be free to hate any ideology.
If someone wrote 'F—k the National Party', would the authorities ever consider that a hate-crime?
    Not a chance.

Considering the Koran is full of hate it really is quite ironic.

Yes - to hell with thought police, it suits this control freak to a tee. That exactly what his ideology is - thought policing. He wants the coppers to make the mean thoughts and words go away.

    Absolutely.

Saying F-ck Islam is you expressing your opinion on an ideology which is perfectly fine.

Saying F-ck Muslims is attacking individuals and should be condemned and outlawed.

Don't think it should be outlawed although, I think it already is.
People say 'f—k Christians' and 'f—k white people' all the time.

    I think we need consistency.

I was reading today where a complaint made about someone tweeting something (I dont remember the actual wording) like "F*ck Blacks" which resulted in an immediate ban for that person from twitter whereas a complaint made about someone else tweeting "F*ck Whites" received a response from twitter admins saying no community rules had been broken.

The important matter for me is that it should never be a crime to attack anyone elses opinions/views/beliefs/religion irrespective of how strongly those views are held.

Twitter is a private company so it can do what it likes but I'd like the same freedom of speech laws America has in Europe.

I think if any hate speech laws where brought in here, many Muslim Imams would have to delete around 60% of the sermons they deliver every week.
