    Former attorney general Peter Sutherland dies aged 71

    Mr Sutherland, who had been ill for some time, passed away on Sunday moring. He is survived by his wife Maruja and their three children.

    Former Fine Gael minister Gemma Hussey said she was saddened to hear of Mr Sutherland’s death. She described him as “a truly great man, wonderful AG and colleague, who shone on the international stage.”

    Paul McGarry, chairman of the Bar of Ireland, said he was “saddened to hear of the death of our great former colleague and AG Peter Sutherland SC”.

    I'm not a mod.... I'm just suggesting that people try and keep comments within the bounds of taste- I'm saying that as much to myself as to others. There is no doubt that this man did a lot of damage not just to Ireland but to Europe as a whole.

    Plenty of ill speak about jimmy saville, fairly sure sutherland and his ilk have effected more people than saville in a negative way.
