Dáil Speaking Time Rules Set for Overhaul Amid Political Dispute
Proposals to amend the rules governing Dáil speaking time are set to be submitted by political parties and groups this Wednesday. This move follows a contentious dispute stemming from a failed bid by Regional Independent TDs, who support the Government, to speak from the opposition benches.

The current system is now under review, with potential changes that might allocate more speaking time to Government TDs. The Regional Independent Group remains firm in its stance that its members should be allowed to participate in Leaders' Questions.

The group’s representatives, including Michael Lowry, Barry Heneghan, Gillian Toole, and Danny Healy-Rae, have voiced their dissatisfaction after Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy ruled against their formation of a Dáil Technical Group.

The Dáil Reform Committee is scheduled to discuss the matter on 26 February. Government Chief Whip Mary Butler has committed to collaborating with all parties to find a resolution. The dispute had previously delayed the Dáil's nomination of Micheál Martin as Taoiseach.

Sinn Féin has proposed the formation of a Government technical group, which would grant the Regional TDs speaking time and entitlements similar to those afforded to the Green Party in the previous Dáil.
