Political Tensions Rise as Taoiseach Denies Calling Sinn Féin Leader a Liar
The leader of Sinn Féin has sent a letter to the Ceann Comhairle, requesting that the Taoiseach retract remarks made in Irish,
that she was "telling lies".

In the letter, Mary Lou McDonald wrote: "An Taoiseach made a baseless accusation that I was 'telling lies'. I absolutley refute that this was the case.

"I am now writing to to you to request that you follow up formally with An Taoiseach and ensure that he does now withdraw the remark in the Dáil at the earliest opportunity."

The letter follows a comment in the Dáil yesterday by Micheál Martin when he spoke in Irish and commented that the Sinn Féin leader was "ag insint bréaga".

Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy asked Mr. Martin to retract his remarks after Sinn Féin's Finance Spokesperson, Pearse Doherty, stepped in to inform the chair about Mr. Martin's statement made in Irish.

In response, the Taoiseach insisted he never directly referred to the Sinn Féin leader as a liar.

The exchange occurred after Ms. McDonald criticized the Government's handling of the housing crisis, particularly regarding its review of Rent Pressure Zones.
