President Higgins Leads National Tributes Following Death of Pope Francis
President Michael D Higgins has led Irish tributes to Pope Francis, following the Vatican’s announcement of the pontiff’s passing early this morning.

In a heartfelt statement, President Higgins described the late Pope as a leader of “unique humility and warmth” who brought spiritual depth and global ethical leadership to a world facing growing challenges.

“He consistently reminded us of our shared humanity,” the President said, highlighting Pope Francis’ advocacy on key global issues including climate change, hunger, poverty, and social justice.
President Higgins noted that he had met the Pope on five occasions during his papacy and that their discussions had often included difficult subjects such as abuse scandals within the Church, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights.

“He acknowledged how difficult these matters were, yet never shied away. He asked for prayers and offered them in turn. The steps he took must now be built upon to preserve the hope they inspired.”

Taoiseach Martin: Pope's Message ‘Lives in the Hearts He Touched’

Taoiseach Micheál Martin offered his condolences, praising Pope Francis for a papacy marked by a deep commitment to peace, dignity, and compassion.

“He spoke for the voiceless—the poor, the oppressed, the displaced,” Mr Martin said, also citing the Pope’s urgent calls for climate action and his solidarity with refugees.

Reflecting on the Pope’s 2018 visit to Ireland, the Taoiseach recalled the outpouring of warmth shown by the Irish people and praised the pontiff’s openness in addressing historic abuse in the Catholic Church.

“His legacy is one of reconciliation and justice,” Mr Martin said, describing Pope Francis as a figure who “holds a special place in the hearts of the Irish people.”

Tánaiste Harris: ‘A Moral Voice for Troubled Times’

Tánaiste and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris also paid tribute, describing Pope Francis as “a remarkable figure whose influence reached well beyond the Vatican.”

“His teachings on migration, poverty, and dignity remain vital today,” Mr Harris said. “He provided moral leadership during uncertain times.”
He commended the Pope’s courage in facing illness with grace and dignity, and expressed sympathy with the global Catholic community.

“His legacy of hope, mercy, and unity will continue to inspire us all to work towards a better world,” he added.
