University of Galway Students Struggle to Find Accommodation, Survey Finds
A recent survey conducted by the University of Galway Students’ Union has revealed that nearly 80% of students faced difficulties securing accommodation for the academic year.

According to the union, the ongoing housing crisis is placing immense pressure on students, contributing to emigration and potentially leading to a future skills shortage if the issue is not addressed.

The survey gathered responses from 1,710 students, representing approximately 8.5% of the university’s student body. Among those surveyed, nearly four out of five reported struggling to find suitable housing. Alarmingly, close to one-third said they might have reconsidered enrolling in their course had they been aware of the challenges in securing accommodation.

Financial strain is also a significant concern, with half of the students surveyed working part-time to cover the costs of their education. Additionally, two-thirds reported paying over €500 per month in rent. Meanwhile, 30% of respondents have opted to live at home and commute to campus due to the housing shortage.

The findings highlight the growing challenges faced by students in accessing affordable accommodation, raising concerns about the long-term impact on higher education and the workforce.
